Visitors Medical Insurance

March 11th, 2010
International Medical Insurance

Travel can be a wonderful experience, provided you aren’t unfortunate enough to become ill or suffer an accident that is. If you travel outside your own country, and do not have adequate visitor’s medical insurance, it could turn out to be one of the biggest mistakes in your life. Not only could it end up costing as much as a condo, it may even put your health and wellbeing into serious jeopardy. Today, visitors insurance has never been so easy to find, or affordable. So why take the risk?

What‘s covered?

Policies can cover a range of types of treatment. Primarily, your concern should be whether consultations, urgent care or emergency treatment is included. Consultations refer to visiting a medical practitioner, usually, at a medical centre. Urgent care involves more serious conditions, like a fever, a bad cut or even a fracture.

Anything which needs medical attention quickly.  Emergency treatment means any medical condition considered life threatening or any illness which could cause permanent physical damage, if treatment was delayed. As would be the case with a heart attack, stroke or any serious accident.

Pre-Existing Conditions

Most insurance companies will not cover any medical expenses incurred, for any pre-existing medical conditions. This means, any illness or condition you are currently receiving medical treatment at home for. This would include pregnancy, angina, high blood pressure, even AIDS. It is important to be honest with the insurance company before taking out any policy.

If you don’t tell them about a condition, they will find out, in the event of any claim being made. You will only be getting yourself into hot water, and, you never know, your particular type of illness may not be excluded. Every insurance company will have different exclusions in place.  When it comes to providing them with the necessary information, honesty is definitely the best policy. Often, it’s simply a matter of shopping around.

Who’s Covered?

A medical examination is not normally required by most insurance companies. Just about anyone can get some kind of personal visitor’s medical insurance. It is also possible to take out a policy for more than one person and some companies do offer ‘family policies’. A perfect solution for couples with young children.

Usually only one passport number will be required. Don’t worry that other members might not be covered, simply because the company only has one passport number. This is normal procedure for many companies. Usually, the only form of identification needed is a passport, although companies can vary.

Checking Your Policy

If you have made a mistake, the company does not have the correct details stated within the policy or you do not have the correct cover, you must contact them immediately. They can arrange for the necessary changes to be made.  If you choose to buy insurance online, a confirmation email is usually sent straight away. This will include all the important details.

Check it carefully, if there are any mistakes, now’s the time to let the company know. If everything is in order, keep a copy safe, and a hardcopy is always a good backup to have. Your visitor’s medical insurance card should be in the mail soon afterwards.  This will also have important details on it and should be kept in a safe place on your travels. It could turn out to be as essential as your passport.

Insurance Company Tries to Get Out of Pay Out

March 10th, 2010
When a loved dies, especially in a tragic accident, you do not expect the pain of your loss to be made worse by your insurance company.

This is what happened to David Webb, who was left to raise his two year old daughter on his own, after his wife was killed when a suicidal motorist deliberately drove his car into theirs.

Mr and Mrs Webb, from Letchworth, Hertfordshire, and their daughter Samantha had been driving on the A1 in December 2004 when their car was rammed by 19-year-old Charles Brown.

Driving the wrong way at 90mph, he was trying to kill himself after being dumped by his girlfriend.

Brown, of Langford, Bedfordshire, was only injured in the crash and was later given a ten-year jail sentence after admitting manslaughter.

The devastated electrician knew his 29-year-old wife Sarah could never be replaced, but he hoped that claiming on their dual life insurance policy would at least help him to meet the costs of suddenly becoming a lone parent.

But Mr Webb was left shattered when Legal & General refused the claim. This was due to a dispute over whether or not charity worker MrsWebb had been a smoker.

The insurance company said that when she filled out the insurance form she had indicated that she was not a smoker. However, a contradictory entry on her medical records was found.

When the form was filled out in 2001 Mrs Webb had given up smoking as they were planning to start a family.

Even though, whether or not she had been a smoker had absolutely nothing to do with her death, Legal and General said it was not obliged to pay out as they claim important information had been withheld.

Mr Webb was then thrown into a legal battle which lasted two and a half .This has been resolved with him receiving 100,000 pounds in an out-of-court settlement.

He said: “I was distraught when my wife was killed, especially given the sudden and horrific circumstances. The last thing I needed was to have to fight my insurance company. They should be ashamed.”

It was soon after his wife’s tragic death that Mr Webb phoned his insurer about the life insurance policy, which would pay out 200,000 pounds for each partner.

A clause in the application had asked: “Have you used any tobacco products in the last 12 months?”

But when filling out the form in 2001, a pregnant Mrs Webb, who had given up smoking, said no. Her husband, who is a smoker, said yes.

When however the insurers examined her medical records they found a form that had been completed from her maternity papers, that had the “smoker” box ticked.

They took this to mean information had been with held by her, even though her family insisted that she gave up smoking when she started to try for a family.

Mr Webb said: “I never dreamed that Legal & General would search through Sarah’s medical records and seek to avoid payment in this way. It’s totally unbelievable.”

Legal & General said: “After careful consideration we took the commercial decision, on a non-liability basis, to accept the offer of settlement from the solicitors acting on behalf of MrsWebb’s estate.”

Boost Health With A Daily Multiple Vitamin

March 8th, 2010
Although there are many vitamin and mineral supplements to choose from, finding the right multivitamin can take a little bit of time and effort. To find the right one for you, you need to ask questions, read label, compare products, and choose wisely. A good multivitamin should complement good nutrition, not replace it. After finding the right formula for your gender and age, you will have a strong nutritional foundation. Even a diet that is healthy diet can be improved by taking a multivitamin. Research shows that individuals who are eating a very healthy diet can improve their nutritional status through the use of a multivitamin.

Vitamins are organic substances or chemicals that are found and food and essential for life. Even though vitamins have their own specific jobs, they work together as a team. Deficiency in one vitamin can lead to sickness. All vitamins are either fat or water-soluble. For example, vitamins A, D, E, and K are fat-soluble and can be stored for a good amount of time in our fat and in the liver. Water soluble vitamins, such as vitamins C and B, cannot be stored and must be taken more than once a day for optimum nutrition.

The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) is defined as the average daily dietary intake level that is sufficient to meet the nutrient requirement of nearly all healthy individuals in a group. This means that RDA amounts of vitamins and minerals are the standard amounts that healthy people need to consume each day in order to avoid deficiency. The RDA does not take into account teenagers, people over the age of 45, and those who are taking oral contraceptives, pregnant, nursing, dieting, engaging in extreme physical activity, drinking alcohol, taking prescription medications, eating processed food, eating prepared food, stressed at work or at home, smoking, or exposed to second hand smoke or air pollution.

Because men and women have different nutritional needs, they need different multivitamin formulas. Age can also be a determining factor in the amount and type of vitamins you need to take. When it comes to multivitamins, one most definitely does not have the same benefits to all people. However, there are a few vitamins then men and women of all ages require. Vitamin A is a very necessary vitamin for everyone. It helps prevent certain types of cancer, helps reduce harmful cholesterol levels and the risk of heart attacks, prevents night blindness, and helps improve our vision. Similarly, it also aids our immune system, helps keep our skin, teeth, bone, hair, and gums healthy and strong, and helps to reduce age spots. Vitamin C, which is also a necessary vitamin for all people, strengthens the immune system, helps prevent chronic illness and cataracts, assists in lowering cholesterol, and helps make collagen. It also repairs damaged cells, bones, and teeth, as well as helps heal wounds, burns, and bleeding gums. Vitamin C can help healing after surgery, prevent colds and the flu, protect us against cancer, and help our bodies to absorb iron. Vitamin D works with vitamins C and A to help prevent colds. It also helps the body absorb calcium and vitamin A and helps to build strong bones with the help of phosphorus and calcium. Vitamin E helps to keep our skin looking young, helps oxygen get around in our bodies, prevents and helps dissolve blood clots, and helps burns heal faster. It also helps lower blood pressure, helps nerves convey messages faster, stops leg cramps, and helps boost our energy levels. Vitamin K is essential to the activation of osteocalcin, which is a protein that helps prevent bone loss. It also allows our body to produce prothrombin, a blood-clotting chemical that is essential so that our blood can clot. The B vitamins are an extremely important group of vitamins that work best when they are available in the body. Thiamin, which is also known as vitamin B1, helps keep our nerves and muscles working well. It can also prevent seasickness and tooth pain after dental work, as well as helps to treat shingles and helps with the digestion of carbohydrates. Thiamin also prevents beriberi. Riboflavin, known as vitamin B2 or vitamin G, is easily harmed by light and is the most common vitamin deficiency among Americans. It helps our vision, supports reproduction, helps eliminate sore mouths, lips, and tongues, and helps metabolize fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. Niacin not only lowers total cholesterol, but it also raises HDL (good) cholesterol. It also improves circulation, helps to eliminate bad breath, helps to reduce migraine headaches and dizziness, and reduces our cravings for sweets. Vitamin B6 can only work in our bodies for eight hours. Therefore, deficiencies in this vitamin are noted in many diseases. It helps us to make antibodies, stop nausea, reduce morning sickness, relieve mouth dryness, help reduce leg cramps and numbness in hands, help us use protein and fats, and helps make more niacin. With the help of folic acid, B6 can reduce harmful levels of homocysteine, which is an amino acid linked to heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Vitamin B12 makes DNA with the help of folic acid. It also helps our nerve cells communicate, helps burn fat, and keeps us energized. Deficiencies of B12 can cause serious types of anemia and even nerve cell damage. Folic acid has a powerful ability to prevent spinal bifida, as well as help milk production in nursing mothers, reduce pain, make our skin look healthier, kill germs that cause food poisoning, help cells grow and divide, and help make DNA. Biotin is a natural beauty product that helps delay gray hair and baldness and also helps heal eczema and inflammation of the skin. It can also help aching muscles. Pantothenic acid helps us make antibodies to fight infection. It also converts sugar and fat into energy, therefore reducing fatigue.

Because our body needs minerals to provide rigidity and strength to our teeth and bones, help with nerve and muscle function, help with the clotting of blood, and for everyday tissue repair and growth, there are many minerals we need each day to keep us healthy. Be sure that the multivitamin supplement you buy contains calcium, iodine, magnesium, zinc, selenium, copper, manganese, chromium, molybdenum, sodium, potassium, boron, and vanadium. Iron should be present in a formula for women who are still menstruating, as other adults can meet their needs for iron through food. Women need more silica to keep their bones healthy, as well as boron and calcium.

Vitamins can be easily wiped out by light, air, heat, and water. Therefore, cooking many foods can actually destroy their vitamins. Fortunately, taking a good quality multivitamin will provide you with dietary insurance against all of the issues faced when attempting to get vitamins through food. Studies have shown that the longer you use supplemental multivitamins, the greater your health benefits. Because it is not possible for you to get all the vitamins, minerals, and herbs needed in one pill taken once daily, most formulas are designed to be taken three times a day to provide you with superior benefits.

Along with the above ingredients, both women and men can benefit from a multivitamin including lutein, zeaxanthin, grape seed, bilberry, black tea, and cherry fruit. Additionally, men can receive greater benefits from a multivitamin including lycopene, as it reduces incidence of prostate cancer, heart disease, and age-related macular degeneration. Similarly, women can benefit from a multivitamin including cranberry, with its antioxidant capabilities, as well as phosphorus to support bone health. Those women who are still menstruating can benefit from chaste tree berry extract as it reduces premenstrual syndrome symptoms, while those women who are going through menopause can benefit from soy extract which protects women against heart attacks and keeps bones from becoming brittle and breaking. When buying a multivitamin make sure the manufacturer is reputable and read the labels of any supplement you are considering buying. The vitamins should be protected from light by being packaged in a non-transparent package, and the tablets should be coated with light resistant shield. Make sure your multivitamin does not contain sugar, artificial coloring, or artificial flavoring. Look to your internet health food store for quality name brand multivitamins because not all multiple vitamins are made the same.

Low Cost Medical Insurance

March 7th, 2010
Medical costs have been rising over the last several years, and have reached levels that an average middle class family cannot afford in the event of a major illness or accidents. With increase in medical facilities and better-equipped hospitals, this is perhaps inevitable, but that doesn’t make it less worrying if you are affected.

The best course open to individuals under these circumstances is to opt for medical insurance. The cost of medical insurance is high, and when you consider the fact that you don’t get much in return other than when an illness afflicts you, the cost of your medical insurance merits serious consideration. Fortunately, there is a way to resolve this dilemma. You can shop for the best possible combination of coverage and cost.

First of all, you could check out on the governmental and other help available to you in this regard. If you live in a country like the United States and are either elderly or very poor, the government comes to your aid through schemes like Medicare and Medicaid. If you are not covered by any such program, as most likely you are not, then what do you do?

The first step towards obtaining a low cost health insurance is to know what is being offered and how it is priced. Knowing the alternatives in terms of facilities and prices will help you to make decisions that can reduce your cost of medical insurance without compromising on your real requirements. Knowledge, in this case, is truly power and money. You could get this knowledge by doing some research on the Internet. There are a number of sites that offer you comparative information on medical insurance plans, which you can refer before finalizing your medical insurance coverage.

Learn about the different options available to you; research the company and the agent you are proposing to deal with; find out what you are covered for.

Some of the ways by which you can reduce your medical insurance costs are given below:

· Pay premiums annually. This will help you avoid or reduce the service fee and might also earn you discounts

· Review your policy regularly. Make sure that it covers your real requirements and does not have additional cover that you may not need. For example, additional coverage for pregnancy may not be really required for you and the normal coverage for this might be quite sufficient for your anticipated needs

· Keep a reasonable limit on the ceiling of medical expenditure in your policy. If you don’t have a ceiling or if you have a very high ceiling, you may be covering every eventuality but may also be paying higher for the coverage unnecessarily. Match the terms of the policy to your needs.

· If you have to file insurance claims, make sure that you keep all the documents available and know what you are covered for. In case you are not sure about whether a particular disease or treatment is covered. File your claim anyway

· Group plans are another way in which you can reduce your medical insurance costs. Find out about group plans and how they apply to you. See if your company, or member organization, such as your local Chamber of Commerce have a plan in place.

· Carry a higher deductible amount: The amount of expenditure that you opt to bear yourself has a great bearing on the medical insurance cost. If you are comparatively free from minor illnesses and you would like to be covered only for major illnesses, you can opt for a higher deductible reducing your premium without sacrificing the coverage you desire.

· If you discover a serious medical condition, it is better to continue with your existing insurer, as going to a new insurer will almost certainly increase your costs and will likely limit, or exclude, coverage for any pre-existing conditions.

· Avoid supplemental insurance. Supplemental insurance is a policy that gives you additional cash for the same illness that is covered by another insurance.

Pregnancy Disability Insurance – Protect Your Income For a Truly Safe Pregnancy

March 5th, 2010
Missing work during and after pregnancy has become a common occurrence. According to a 2002 study, 29% of short term disabilities (180 days or less) and 12% of long-term disabilities are due to pregnancy. Maternity disability can turn what is otherwise a happy occasion into a financially harrowing experience when the mother is left unable to work for months before and/or after delivery. Disability Income insurance can be the answer to the unknown risk to a household’s cash flow due to pregnancy.

Many larger companies offer paid maternity leave to employees whereby the employee is granted full pay for a period of time (generally 3 months) while out of work with the newborn. Any complications that cause the employee to miss work before delivery or beyond the maternity leave period after delivery result in a loss of income for days or even months.

Individual short term disability insurance can provide up to 70% of regular income when you’re not able to work due to illness or injury for 3-6 months. Long-term disability insurance takes over after the short-term benefits period has passed and can provide income protection for up to five years or longer.

Mothers-to-be often rely on the group disability insurance offered by their employer. Group disability usually covers up to 60% of regular income. However, all benefits received from such a policy are taxed as regular income, lowering take home dollars to roughly 42% of regular income. Group policies are also commonly riddled with exceptions and limitations that further reduce or eliminate benefits altogether.

Women with a family history of troubled pregnancies may also consider catastrophic disability insurance (CDI). CDI is different in that it is intended to cover the costs of extended at-home care instead of income loss. For instance, if a pregnancy requires the mother-to-be to literally stay in bed for months, CDI can cover the cost of a nurse to help with daily living needs. Such care is not covered by any other type of insurance and will be very expensive. CDI will cover up to specified daily amount ($120, for instance) and can be purchased with an option to increase benefits annually based on inflation.

Mothers-to-be with group disability insurance can very affordably plug the holes in their policy with a supplemental disability insurance policy. Supplemental coverage can extend income protection to 100% of pre-disability cash flow and benefits paid from the supplemental policy are not taxed as income.

The key to protecting a future mother’s income during pregnancy is to get disability insurance, be it individual or supplemental, before becoming pregnant. Once pregnant, the eligibility for additional disability insurance evaporates.

Future moms have several options to protect their income from a long-term or short-term pregnancy disability. Without this coverage, families take the risk of losing a good portion of their income for months, if not longer. Whether you participate in a group plan at work or not, maternity disability can be planned for in an affordable manner to help ensure a truly safe pregnancy where your family’s quality of life remains unaffected.

Please visit us at Disability Insurance Update with any questions or to find further information regarding the protection of your income during and after pregnancy.
